The
overall goal of the Economic Justice & Empowerment Program of the
Northeast Ohio AFSC is to help build a social movement based on Quaker
principles for justice, peace and sustainability. The program will seek
to create and/or nurture four sequential and mutually-reinforcing stages
necessary for movement building.
-
Creation and/or
strengthening movement institutions / organizations.
-
Recruitment
of new participants / constituencies.
-
Education of
both new and existing participants / constituents.
-
Political Action
of both new and existing participants / constituents.
The program will educate, advocate and
organize in connection to the AFSC focus area of economic justice. Major
proposed activities include campaign
finance reform (addressing money in politics from a moral and religious
perspective) and the Ohio Committee on Corporations,
Law and Democracy (examining the connection between corporate power
and democracy). In addition, the program will support the Concerned
Citizens of Lake Township in their efforts to determine the extent of
and clean-up radiation at the Industrial Excess
Landfill in Uniontown, Ohio. The program is also addressing the
issues of Pentagon Spying on local peace
activities, Public Access, protecting
local cable access from corporate control, and Minority
Employment in Akron Analysis and Oversight.
