In Akron, Ohio we gathered on Monday, January 1, 2007 to remember all the casualties of the Iraq war...the 3000+ U.S. troops and the hundreds of thousand innocent Iraqis. Despite inclement weather, about 50 people came out to the main gate of Glendale Cemetary to begin 24 hours of remembrance. Stories of those affected by the war were shared with the gathering, as well as a small sampling of the names of casualties. Participants were also given a "call to action" suggesting ways that each person can work to bring an end to the war. Some of those suggestions included letter writing (to local newspapers and to federal representatives) calling for a stopping of the funding for the war; gathering at AFSC for a yard sign making workshop (watch for details regarding times and dates); and engaging family, friends and neighbors in discussions about the war - inviting them to join us in calling for "Not one more death, not one more dollar" for this unjust war. After the opening ceremony, participants marched silently to the Federal Building in Akron to commence a 24-hour vigil, that ended with a final ceremony on Tuesday evening at 7 pm.
This AFSC-sponsored event was one of hundreds of similar events that took place across the country. Download a copy (pdf) of the article written by Bill Lilley at the Akron Beacon Journal covering the event. WKYC (Channel 3 Cleveland/Akron) also filmed the event and aired a spot on the 11pm news. Below are some photos of those who came out to say "Not one more death. Not one more dollar." in Akron.
The Northeast Ohio Antiwar Coalition (NOAC) also hosted an event. Read an article posted in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. (pdf)
