The week of February 7th to 15th 2007 was designated as Diversity Week for Youngstown State University. Red Hot Embers was one of 6 “Tunnels of Diversity” where the participants entered rooms “or tunnels of awareness” and learned about homophobia, homelessness, female body image, racism, AIDs and the Debt and age-ism.
Mr. William Blake, Director of the Center for Diversity Studies commented, “ …this event was designed to wake our students up to the pressing issues confronting them in the world. The Red Hot Embers Exhibit is most appropriate and fits in with the larger social justice issues presented in our “Tunnels of Diversity.”
The Akron Brother Circle and the National Black Alcoholism Drug Addition Council of Akron Ohio conducted free AIDS testing, with clients receiving their results that day. Twenty-three students were tested with no positive results! The exhibit was warmly received by all who attended.
